The Good Humus Farm Preservation Project

A farm and community partnership to ensure local food availability.

Local farmers Jeff and Annie Main have embarked on the Good Humus Farm Preservation Project to preserve their farm as an organic farm and keep it affordable for farmers in the future. They have created an agricultural easement to be held in perpetuity by a Land Trust.

How does the easement work?

• The land must always be farmed
• The land must be farmed sustainably
• The farmer must live on the land
• No less than 50% of the farmer’s income must be derived from farming

Only the actual agricultural value of the farm property will remain, making the farm affordable to the next farmer—and the next.

The Good Humus Farm Preservation Project requires the participation of both the farm and the community they feed. As a seller and promoter of local organic foods, the Co-op has committed continued support of this project.
